During this period of growth, community systems began forming to support residents in need. One example was the Fairfield County Infirmary, established in 1820 as part of the county’s early public care system. Once part of a much larger farm spanning what is now the Fairfield DD and Ohio University Lancaster campuses, it provided food, shelter, and care for individuals who were elderly, disabled, or without family or resources. Today, the remaining building sits on a small parcel of land alongside an unmarked cemetery.
Over time, this legacy of care evolved into today’s commitment to supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families, continuing a long tradition of community support in Fairfield County.
Fairfield DD partnered with GeoPro to document the Fairfield County Infirmary. Explore this virtual tour with stories, videos and archives of many who lived there. It is important for us to remember our history so the lessons we can learn can guide our future as we build a community that recognizes the value of every person.
