DiscoverU October Classes

DiscoverU offers free monthly trainings which are open to anyone who is interested. Available trainings offered for October 2017 are listed below along with a brief description. If you have any questions about the trainings or would like to be added to the monthly mailing list, please contact Kristin Thorne kthorne@fairfielddd.com (740) 652-7230.  Trainings begin at scheduled times so please plan to arrive a few minutes early so you won’t miss any information that is provided.

 Amazing Body Language

One hour session. Body language is a nonverbal communication, where thoughts, intentions, or feelings are expressed by physical behaviors such as facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space. Trainee will discover what their body says to them and about them. Supplies will be provided to accompany curriculum.

Basic Money Skills

One hour session. Progressive training offered in four sessions. It is suggested that the trainee plan to attend all four sessions but it is not a requirement.

Trainee will be introduced to coin and bill currency and their values. Realistic looking money is available for trainee to use. Curriculum progresses to adding coin and bills together. Power Point instruction, work sheets, and take home practice sheets are provided.

Computer Basics

One hour session. Progressive training offered in four sessions.. It is suggested that the trainee plan to attend all four sessions but it is not a requirement. The DiscoverU Computer Lab is equipped with six computers and class size is limited to six trainees.

Trainee will be introduced to the use of a computer. Curriculum covers such topics as the parts of a computer, operating systems, the internet and using email. This interactive training uses PowerPoint instruction as well as hands-on training.

Dress for Success

One hour session. Clothing makes a strong visual statement about how you see yourself and has an effect on both the wearer and the observers. First impressions count. People are evaluated by their appearance (this is a key body language element in first impressions).  Trainee will learn “what to wear” and “what not to wear” anywhere. Models will be present to demonstrate curriculum.

 Stress Relief

One and a half hour session. Dean Ralloff offers a training session on Breathing, Self-talk, Imagery and a second session of Stop Thought, Associated Relaxation.

Conflict Resolution

One hour session Participants will use role play and open discussion to assist them in understanding how to tactfully manage difficult situations.  This knowledge will assist participants in discovering how two people that disagree can come to a peaceful understanding.

 Process Phonics

One hour session Lori Williamson offers the introduction of relationships between letters and sounds and pronunciation.  Participants will use flash cards and pictures to learn basic spelling, letter identification, and formation of words.

 Live Safe

Two hour session. This curriculum is designed to encourage participation.  Topics of conversation are centered around teaching trainee to identify personal safety and safe people in their lives. Conversations will include bullying, verbal/emotional, physical, and financial abuse.

 Interviewing 1:1

One hour session. It is recommended to attend at least two sessions.

Experienced job trainer will provide a one-on-one interview and offer interviewing tips. Trainee will have the opportunity to answer interview questions most commonly asked by employers. Trainee should come prepared to greet interviewer, have a copy of their resume, and have appropriate dress/hygiene. Job Trainer will provide feedback and suggestions when interview is complete.

Social Media

One hour session. Social media (networking) is a method of communication with people through online platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Social media can be a hub for things like cyberbullying and questionable activities. Trainee will learn how to safely use these sites so that their online experience is enjoyable.

 How To Series

One hour session. Progressive training offered in four sessions. It is suggested that the trainee plan to attend all four sessions but it is not a requirement.

Mathew Wilson, Amigo Family Counseling, provides Family Group Workshops and Family/Individual Counseling to individuals on the autism spectrum and is in the process of expanding services to the Pickerington area. Matthew has graciously agreed to provide a “How to Series” at DiscoverU for anyone interested. Topics include “From My Point of View”, “Anybody Have the Time”, “Hidden Social Rules”, and “Now That You Are the Employer”.

Typing Basics

One hour session. Progressive training offered in four sessions. It is suggested that the trainee plan to attend all four sessions but it is not a requirement. The DiscoverU Computer Lab is equipped with six computers and class size is limited to six trainees.

Trainee will be introduced to keyboarding and typing basics using one of the computers in our lab. Job trainer will assist each trainee with accessing an online typing program and creating an account. Trainee will have the opportunity to practice progressive typing.

Summer Collaborative Art Camp for Kids

A Collaboration of Art Camps

by  Art & Clay on Main, Decorative Arts Center of Ohio (DACO), & the Ohio Glass Museum (OGM)

This camp is designed to teach kids various marbleizing techniques from three different downtown art studios.  Throughout the week kids will progress through each studio learning new techniques and gaining different perspectives about marbleizing.  Projects will include (and not limited to):  ceramic painting with a fun technique to marbleize the glazes, glass blowing, marbleizing fabrics and papers.  Children will also be taught the age old sport of Marbles!

 

We are SO excited to collaborate with the talents and teachings of the great artistic minds in our own beautiful downtown!
